You can register to vote or update your voter registration through the Virginia Department of Elections.

Virginia’s Insurance Marketplace does not directly collect voter registration. Your decision whether to register to vote is voluntary. Neither registering nor declining to register to vote will in any way affect the availability or the amount of assistance or service you receive from Virginia’s Insurance Marketplace. Your decision to register or not register will remain confidential.

Voter Registration Application

You can register to vote or update your registration online or by using a printable paper application from the Virginia Department of Elections website. You can pick up a paper voter registration application at your local voter registration office. If you have questions or need assistance completing your application, please contact the Virginia Department of Elections.

Mailed applications must be postmarked at least 11 days before the next election in which you plan to vote.

Who Can Register to Vote in Virginia

To register to vote in Virginia, you must: 

• Be a United States citizen 
• Be a resident of Virginia
• Be at least 18 years old by the next general election (you may preregister at 16, but cannot vote until eligible)
• Not currently be judged mentally incapacitated and disqualified to vote 
• If convicted of a felony, have had your voting rights restored
